When closing a needle valve, how tight is tight enough?

Correctly engineered needle valves are designed to have the correct amount of sealing torque, to seal the valve shut, with only modest hand pressure.

The diameter of the knobs is designed so that this leverage creates adequate radial torque to seal the valve without damage.
